Performers
Where do rules apply and where does freedom prevail? Who takes the floor - or the melody - and how do the others react? The principles of jazz can be applied surprisingly well to social structures. And this is precisely why the Jazz in Concert programme for middle school students is not only linked to music lessons, but also to subjects that deal with political education.
‘Jazz and Democracy’ is the motto of the concert, which the Alte Oper is offering to seventh to tenth formers of all school types. Attending the concert is independent of whether music lessons are currently on the timetable in the participating classes. It can also be prepared for and taken up in social studies, PoWi or history lessons by discussing topics such as behaviour in a group or the importance of hierarchies on the one hand and freedom on the other. It is about communication and interaction and about what groups and a democratic society can learn from the rules of jazz. This interdisciplinary approach is also conveyed in a further training course for teachers, which can be attended as an option to prepare classes for the concert.
