Music Plus: Music and research

Routine? Iván Fischer doesn't like the word, although he has a lot of sympathy for very similar concepts: longevity and familiarity. ‘We know each other inside out,’ he says of his collaboration with the Budapest Festival Orchestra, ’there is absolute trust.’ He founded the orchestra in his native Hungary in 1983 and has moulded it into one of the world's leading orchestras. ‘We work very intensively and in a very personal way,’ says Fischer, describing the secret of the great success story that he has brought to life. A chamber music approach to music-making that is perfectly suited to the rich tonal detail of Mahler's symphonies. At this year's guest performance at the Alte Oper, the Budapest Festival Orchestra's outstanding Mahler expertise will be on display.
