Licence to applaud in between: For Augustin Hadelich, Peter Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto is ‘one of the few pieces where I would say it is totally appropriate for the audience to clap after the first movement. I even find it disappointing if there is no applause after the first movement, because its ending is almost more exciting than the last movement.’ The violinist is particularly fond of the first movement of this concerto - for example the second theme with its preludes: ‘Everyone hurts a little, but in a good way, you can feel the pain before it dissipates.’ In the concert by the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern, Tchaikovsky's classic of concert literature is embedded in a Russian programme that tells of dark final journeys as well as the passion of love.
