When we talk about ‘Venice’ and ‘Baroque’, Vivaldi can't be far away. And indeed, the music of one of the lagoon city's most famous sons still plays a central role in the work of the Venice Baroque Orchestra. The recording of Vivaldi's ‘Four Seasons’, with which the orchestra made its CD debut a quarter of a century ago and set new standards in terms of enthusiasm and liveliness, is evidence of this. Vivaldi's Venice is now also the subject when the original sound ensemble joins forces with mandolinist Avi Avital and soprano Núria Rial. Together, they will bring the well-known concertos of the seasons to life with Venetian gondola songs. ‘Here,‘ says Avital, “you can hear what was being sung in the streets at the same time: subversive, raw lyrics, songs of the ”taxi drivers’ of the time.’
