Music to the ancient poetry of the free-spirited troubadours from Bengal is presented by Rina Das Baul, one of the strongest voices of this culture, which has existed since the 8th century. She comes from a Baul family and learnt lyrics, rhythms and musical instruments from her grandfather from an early age. He taught her to understand the musical nuances and also introduced her to the Baul philosophy, which has been passed down in the family for centuries. Bauls do not identify with any organised religion or the caste system, but believe that a person's physical body is where God resides. Bauls are admired as much for their freedom from convention as for their music and poetry. Their musical culture has been recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage.
